Stay Cool and Healthy this SummerAs home health caregivers, we want everyone including our clients to stay cool and healthy this summer.  So, with the scorching summer heat right around the corner, we compiled a list of things that you can do to stay cool this summer.

  • Keep hydrated! It is very important to drink lots of water. It is recommended that a person with normally functioning kidneys and heart, drink around 2oz of water per pound of weight.
  • Wear loose fitting, summer appropriate clothing that is a light color.
  • Wear cotton clothing instead of most synthetic materials. Cotton allows better air circulation, it is light in weight, and most people aren’t allergic to it.
  • Use an air conditioner if you have one, or fans, or both.
  • Take a cool shower or bath.
  • If you regularly exercise outside, make sure you exercise in cool times of the day. Exercise in the morning or evening, not the afternoon.
  • Use a small misting bottle to spray misted water onto your hot skin.
  • Keep ice packs in the freezer and apply them to your wrists and neck. Remember to always have a layer of fabric between the ice and your skin to prevent frost bite.
  • The Egyptians even used to sleep with a water dampened sheet.

We hope our list helps you to keep cool and healthy this summer.  The most important thing is to use common sense and make sure you are taking the actions needed to make sure your body does not overheat.  This is especially important if you have a disability, are injured or sick, or are elderly.
