American Society is Wrong about Independence….Our American society is one that praises independence. We write books, create TV shows, and sing songs that acclaim our ideal of independence. Our children are raised to admire people that are independent. Our education system’s ultimate goal is to develop our children into self-sufficient, independent members of society. The start of our country was based on our Declaration of Independence from England.

Independence isn’t a bad thing, but neither is dependence. The problem is that our society treats independence as if it the only way one should be. It treats dependence as if it is an ailment. The fact of the matter is that we all rely on one another, so no one is completely independent. People should not be looked down upon because they are dependent on other people. People who are dependent on other people should not have to feel they need to hide the reality that they are dependent. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a person that is dependent upon other people.

Now-a-days, as our population ages and people are living longer, it can sometimes be difficult for older people to independently live in their own homes. People with disabilities that have a dependence on others should be able to live in their own homes. Truthfully, all of us that are fortunate enough to have a normal modern human lifespan, ultimately will be gradually more dependent on others. We need to realize that there is nothing wrong with this, it is normal. Being dependent on other people and being there for dependent people is one of the things that makes the human experience so special. Our creator intended it to be this way.
