ANA President Barbara Blakeney, MS, APRN,BC, ANP was among the
congressional and other national leaders who joined the president for
a signing ceremony in the Oval Office at the White House.
ANA has worked for this passage since the beginning of 2001. The final
bill (HR 3487) was offered as a substitute to the earlier House-passed
version.
This Nurse Reinvestment Act includes scholarships and loan repayments
for nursing students who agree to work in shortage areas, grants to
health care facilities that improve patient care by implementing the
Magnet criteria for nursing excellence, grants for career ladders
within nursing, training grants for geriatric nursing, loan
cancellations for nursing faculty, and public service announcements to
promote the career of nursing.
ANA applauds Congress for their diligent work on this important
legislation.
Government Affairs also thanks all of the CMAs and individual nurses
who contacted their Members of Congress in support of the Nurse
Reinvestment Act. Congressional staff from all over the nation
mentioned many times that this bill was a constant source of
constituent contacts.
The Florida Nurses Association was instrumental in securing the active
support of key Members of Congress and the Administration. The New
York, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas associations were similarly
successful in moving their delegations. Together, our efforts made
this victory possible!
A copy of the final bill will be posted on the government affairs
website
http://nursingworld.org/gova/politicalpower/ as soon as it is
available.
